The Day Trading Mindset
The Day Trading Mindset: the Real Truth for Day Traders or Anyone Else For That Matter
Day Traders must learn how to master their thinking and control their emotions and motivate themselves every single day to follow the disciplines required to be successful at mastering the day trading profession.
If I gave you a list of 16 to 21 things that it takes to have a Champion’s Mindset, EVERYONE reading this list would agree that these items would definitely be helpful. For years and years, people have been reading all the books that tell you their key 16 to 21 things on what it takes to have a Champion’s Mindset. Yet, we still have to write another book or another article on the subject because apparently most people did NOT get the message.
So the two questions for you to answer for yourself are…why didn’t YOU get the message? and why have you NOT made the necessary changes in your life to insure that you have a Champion’s Mindset working to “propel” yourself towards accomplishing the things you want to accomplish for yourself and your family?
Unfortunately for themselves, most people don’t believe that “THEY” need to make critical changes in their lives because “this stuff” really doesn’t apply to them because they don’t see “themselves” as really needing to make improvements like the ones being suggested in the books or articles OR they “dismiss” the items as something that “really doesn’t make a big difference” in the big picture or grand scheme of doing things better. For some reason, most people find a way to either dismiss or minimize the importance of implementing the items on that list in their business or life.
One of my early mentors, Mr. Larry Thompson, taught me the critical question to ask myself at the beginning of any new experience, new thought or new potential learning situation…he said to ask yourself, “What if it will work?”
What if what is being taught to you right now actually WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE in your life? What if it will work?
What I realized years later after coaching many people, even though my mentor never said this, is that that simple question…what if it will work?…changed HOW I filtered the information coming into my brain…and that is what made the difference.
In the last month, I recently read two books…not related to trading, on the surface…but, truthfully it had EVERYTHING to do with trading and developing the mindset of a champion. I am not telling you that you have to go out and buy these two books because I will summarize a few key points for you…but, I do want you to know that there is additional reading material on the subject that I discovered from analyzing my effectiveness in teaching and mentoring individuals.
How you filter ANY information being taught, right at the beginning, has a major role in determining whether or not you will “get it”…and only after you “get it”, can you make the necessary changes that you need to become a Champion in whatever field you are attempting to master.
My sincere hope for you is that you FILTER any new information being taught from the filter…What if it will work?…that new way of looking at the information, right at the beginning, may just change your entire life!
By the way, here are the titles of the two books, How Doctors Think by Jerome Groopman, M.D. and The Art of Learning by Josh Waitzkin. In the first book, Dr. Groopman does a superb job in showing how a Doctor’s thinking influences the diagnosis and the care that a patient receives. He went through several examples where he showed clearly that how the Doctor filtered the initial answers of a patient’s initial interview, impacted the diagnosis and the suggested care that they received…in fact, he made the connection that that filter in some cases was the difference in whether the patient lived or died. Think about that for a second or two…“how the Doctor filtered the initial answers of a patient’s initial interview…determined whether a patient lived or died.”
The reason this subject of filtering new information is so critical to a day trader’s success, or anyone for that matter, is because most people are not aware that they “may” be filtering information that they see on the charts or read in books…in the wrong way and they don’t even know it. This is why I am taking the time to make sure that you “filter the information I will be sharing with you” from the filter of …what if it will work?
As your personal day trading or business mentor, I discovered this vital distinction early in my coaching/mentoring career. I realized that I must first make sure that you are “able to hear/understand my message” BEFORE you can “get what the message is about”…and only after that…can you take the appropriate steps and make the changes you need to make in order to BECOME A CHAMPION. This is why I teach my students in an entire different way than other teachers…my first responsibility when teaching anyone is to make sure I teach them exactly how to make money first…then, I can teach them the rest.
In the second book, Josh Waitzkin does an incredible job of going through the process of achieving mastery in two separate disciplines…chess (a mental thinking discipline) and Tai Chi (a physical and thinking discipline). This book is his autobiography on how he became an eight-time National Chess Champion and how he also went on to master a martial arts discipline, where he holds a combined twenty-one National Championship titles in addition to several World Championship titles.
Achieving Mastery in any discipline is a process of learning and making new distinctions. That means that you must continually filter new information in a meaningful way. In fact, if you really think about it, you may need to go back to the old information that you may have “filtered out the important distinctions” because you inadvertently placed the wrong filter on the information when you were first exposed to it.
STOP…PLEASE REREAD THE INFORMATION FROM THE BEGINNING BEFORE YOU CONTINUE READING…YOUR LIFE IS ABOUT TO CHANGE WHEN YOU DO THAT AND YOU CHANGE HOW YOU FILTER THE INFORMATION BEING PRESENTED FROM THIS POINT FORWARD…
What if it will work?…What if it will work?…What if it will work?
How not to filter new information?
Before getting started, I need you to make sure you are not falling in the trap of filtering out the key distinctions before you actually get a chance to “get the message” being presented.
So I have to give you a way to “try on the information being presented”. I know that most people view life and new information from a negative and skeptical perspective. It is done under the guise of …hey, I am just being realistic or I am just asking questions, when they are asking sarcastic or doubting type of questions, implying to themselves that the information can’t be right or they use some other type of semi-legitimate rationale or excuse.
In getting started OR re-started in many people’s circumstances, I have to ask you to try, as best as you can, “to suspend your preconceived notions about a topic…until you try to make at least ONE of the changes suggested for you and you read this entire document at least twice.”
You can always go back to your old way of thinking, if you want…but, what I am asking you to do is to suspend your preconceived notions first…try at least one of the suggested changes and read this entire document at least twice before you attempt to go back to your old way of thinking.
Most of you are reading this document for a reason. And, you need to tell yourself the truth about your reason(s)…not to me…but, tell yourself the truth to yourself…for your sake.
If you are NOT where you want to be in your life, could it be that you have “bought the wrong plan for your life” and you are not aware that you are following the wrong path?
Are you frustrated with yourself and your bank account? Do you wish there was more money in the account?
Are you disappointed with yourself because for some reason you are no longer pursuing your goals and dreams with that childlike enthusiasm that you had when you were a child trick or treating on Halloween night?
Do you find yourself lacking the courage to take the necessary actions you need to take to move yourself and your business forward?
Do you believe in yourself to the degree that you believe you can bounce back from a temporary defeat or setback? Now, that’s a tricky one…because most people say…“yes I can”…and then, you hear them whining and complaining and being a victim for a long time…so the question has to be asked differently…can you bounce back IMMEDIATELY without having a ‘poor me’ pity party or victim party?
If the person you cared the most for in this world needed $15,000 or $25,000 in the next 5 to 6 hours to save his or her life, could you go to the bank (or with the extra cash that you have lying around in your house) and just give them the money?
If you did have enough money to give to your most cared for friend in the world…what they needed, did you put yourself in jeopardy because you did give them that money?
If you needed $5,000 to change your own life or go on the vacation that you always wanted to go on, can you find a way to get that money within 24 to 48 hours?
I can continue with the questions…but, what is important is that you ask yourself your own questions, as well. Then, have the courage to tell yourself the truth and then, take action to change your life for the better.
I don’t know how old you are…but, think of this for a minute…in the greatest country in the world…you have the opportunity to be and do whatever you want to do…isn’t it a shame at the age of _____ that you don’t have an extra $________ to make a difference in your life or someone’s life that you care about? How long do you want to stay in that type of situation? Does it bother you enough so that you can muster up the courage to get started in making the necessary changes in your life? Can you pull it together to pick yourself up and have the guts to try to make things happen just one more time? When do you think would be the best time to get started?…Next year, when things get better…or do you think you might want to get started NOW?
Here’s your starting point…suspend your current beliefs and filter the information presented in this document from the filter … WHAT IF IT WILL WORK? What if it will work for me?
Now, we are ready to go to work and make some vital changes in your life…that WILL make a difference…you are about to embark on an incredible journey…starting right now! By the way, if you have not listened to the Achieving Your Greatness audio yet, now might be a good time to take a 47 min break to re-filter your mind in a positive direction. The audio is right on the Home page at www.natebrooks.com.
Keeping Yourself Motivated In Tough Times
I can’t predict the future, but at the time of writing this document, the pundits are forecasting we could be headed into the Greatest Depression of our time because it will be a Global Depression, not just a country-by-country depression. Honestly, it does NOT matter. We are living in a time where there is unprecedented opportunity for those with the right skills…that’s what matters…and you have to position yourself to learn those skills so you can take advantage of the opportunities that are unfolding every single day.
What matters is that YOU take 100% responsibility for where you are in your life, for where you are NOT in your life and for where you are going in your life.
You must take 100% responsibility for all three possibilities BECAUSE that is the only way you will be able to make the adjustments that will empower you to move forward to get to where you want to go and be.
Trust me when I say this…I know that many of you, me included, have been dealt some unfair devastating blows in life that plays a big part in being where you are in your life at this present time…unfortunately, none of that matters because life is not fair and nobody said it was suppose to be fair…so you can’t live under the guise that what has happened to you in life is unfair…that’s just the way it is. You must take responsibility to learn the skills necessary so that you can create an income and start building wealth…period.
- Some people blame their problems on racism…here’s what really matters…did you spend the time studying and improving your skills so that you can still earn an income regardless of whether you are treated unfairly or unjustly?
- Some people blame their problems on a health challenge…here’s what really matters…are you doing everything in your power to find out how to eat right and are you eating right to improve your health from where you are right now?
- Some people blame their problems on the government…here’s what really matters…are you focused on the lies they are telling you or are you reading and studying and learning new skills any way?
- Some people blame their problems on where they grew up…here’s what really matters…do you have a chip on your shoulder because of growing up in crime driven neighborhood with other poor people or are you spending your time studying and learning so you can get yourself out of that situation?
- Some people blame their problems on getting fired from a job…here’s what really matters…are you crying and getting depressed because something happened that was unfair and unjust and you got fired or are you excited because now is the time to capitalize on the two years of studying that you have been doing already preparing to venture out as an entrepreneur?
I know that NONE of us, yes me included, are perfect and there are areas where we fall down and we are not doing all the right things to move our lives forward. For most of us, we are not taking care of our health properly…so if you are eating the burgers, fries, chips, donuts and sodas as your main stay diet…you can expect to get tired and not have the energy required to do all the things that you need to do. You may not lose the 50 to 100 pounds that you need to lose, overnight…but, you can cut the volume of the bad foods you are eating by 25% to 30% and start drinking more water and you’ll see an increase in your energy with just those two adjustments…start somewhere and just make a few changes today and a few more tomorrow. In six to twelve months, you will be well on your way to make all the positive changes that you need to make to improve your health and your energy.
The reason I mentioned this one first is because for most of us, we are not eating or exercising properly and we need to make some changes so that we have the ENERGY to do what is required to succeed. This is not a health document but, it is an important point to address upfront because you do need energy, health and vitality to move your life forward. Therefore, if you need to do something in this arena, do it. It can only help you, not hurt you. That’s all I will say about this topic for now…you know if you need to make changes…if you fall in that category…start doing something and just keep improving as time goes on.
The bottom line is this…in order to persist through the tough times and it looks like the next several years may provide us, as a whole, some tough times, you must develop a mental discipline that keeps you moving forward, in spite of the challenges that you will have to face. It doesn’t matter if you have the best “how to” day trading systems or business growth systems in the world…if you don’t implement them. So the real question is:
Why don’t people have the self discipline to do the things they know ought to be done, when they need to be done?
I promise not to take 5,000 pages to answer that question, even though that may be the right thing to do. However, what I am going to do is to share with you some things that I found useful in my own life and in the lives of the people whom I have coached and mentored. My goal is to provide you with a quick reference tool that can help you to keep moving forward, regardless of external circumstances. I recommend that you keep this reference tool at your finger tips so that you can re-read the key parts, if you find yourself to be slipping. Use this document as your reference tool when you need it.
You can NOT afford to stay depressed for any length of time! Depression is a luxury that rich people can afford if they want to…the rest of us…must figure out how to pick ourselves up and get going. You must develop a mental strategy and use a tool that helps you to KEEP GOING (that means KEEP WORKING with enthusiasm), regardless of external events. The only thing you can control are the DECISIONS (the CHOICES) you make regarding whether you will let external events stop you from doing the necessary things to achieve success and reach your goals in life.
What about living a “balanced” life?
In the last recession that I was around for, a well-known motivational speaker named Brian Tracy shed some insight on this topic…he said, “the first 10 to 12 hours a day you work, keeps you even with the rest of the crowd, it is the next 3 to 4 hours a day after the first 10 to 12 hours that will make the difference.”
It is very likely that things will get worse for a period of time, before they get better. I was just talking with an owner of 20 McDonalds franchisees and he told me that the banks, who use to always lend money to McDonalds franchisees’ owners, are no longer lending him money even though his store-over-store sales and profits are better than they have ever been. He said, “I am having to work harder than before to make sure I maintain the quality standards I want to have for my customers (so they keep coming back). Now, I have to juggle inventory among the 20 stores to make sure I am managing my money more efficiently since the banks will no longer lend me money. In my entire business life, I have never seen things so bad and I am afraid things are going to get a lot worse in the short term.”
There are times when you should lead a balanced life and then, there are times when you might want to focus on your business as your top priority for a period of time to make sure you get the plane off the ground, so to speak.
There has to be some financial safety number in your mind that you should feel comfortable leading a balanced life among work and family and lifestyle. For each person it is different. I would venture to guess that if you don’t have at least $15,000 to $25,000 of extra cash lying around…you might want to call a family meeting…tonight and let your family know that you will be working longer hours…for the family…starting tomorrow morning…you better have a sense of urgency around this…BEFORE you get into financial trouble.
Unfortunately, in tough times OR whenever you are getting a business off the ground, you will have to lead an “unbalanced” life for a period of time…how long? It depends on your skills and the amount of energy you are putting into your business. However, it does take a minimum of 18 to 24 months to get most businesses off the ground and another 3 to 5 years to build a very profitable business, in most cases. However, it is also possible for you to be the exception and achieve success much faster…let’s say…nine to twelve months. By the way, being a day trader is the fastest possible way to creating an income.
Here’s a rule for you:
Make the sacrifices when you get started and when you have developed the financial cushion…then, look to start to add back in some more balance…otherwise put your head down and go to work with enthusiasm and positive self expectancy. Tough times require that you put your blinders on…work hard in 90 day segments and then another 90 day segment…and just keep on going…then, judge by your results every 90 days.
Mental Distinctions You Might Want To Internalize
As a day trader or business owner, you are the Leader of your business. When you are developing your skills, you have to make a decision and have the courage to do the uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable. Live out of your comfort zone…every day!
A leader has to develop the habit of making character based decisions, rather than comfort based decisions. That is how you have to live making the decisions that can move your trading career and business career to the next level of success.
Let me ask you a question…what if you were destined to be a great leader? Wouldn’t it be a shame if it didn’t happen because you didn’t believe in yourself? Give destiny a chance to happen.
I know this next statement may not sound profound but, read it and make your own decision:
1. A leader MAKES something happen first…and then, something happens
2. A follower WAITS for something to happen…and then, something happens
You must continually look for ways to start, create or make the situations that will grow your business and your trading career. Then, you must keep taking action with faith and belief until you reach your desired results.
Make sure you develop the habit of gladly paying the price to get your dreams…never give up on your dreams…don’t you dare let those stupid pundits on television take away your belief that you can succeed…you can and will succeed when you pay the price. The pain of regret is far worse than the pain of creating new habits and success disciplines. Have the attitude of being 100% self-responsible for your own success. Have the guts to be self-determined. Have the pride to be self-motivated. When you have those three traits, you will be a self-functional person who will enjoy the better things in life. You must make room in your schedule for your future. You must be willing to give up certain activities and behaviors that will steal your dreams away from you. You can do it!
Understanding the Process of Change: For Things To Change, You Must Change
The purpose of this entire section, from page 1 until the end, is to give you a set of mindset tools that can help you move forward in your career as a trader and/or business owner. I am trying to give you the information that I learned from my mentors that can help you make the necessary changes that you need to make in your life and business.
Remember, there are only two reasons why people don’t change:
1. They don’t know “how to” change…this is a training issue.
2. They don’t “want to” change……….this is an attitude issue.
Whenever, I am coaching people…I get to determine whether someone is serious about making the necessary changes in their lives…it is easy to figure out, based on whether I am getting “how to” questions from the person or don’t “want to” excuses.
Additionally, there are only three reasons why people do change:
1. The hurt bad enough that they have to change.
2. They learn enough so that they want to change.
3. They receive a tool or a mentor comes into their life that equips them with the proper tools, procedures and advice that makes them believe that they can change and succeed.
Unfortunately for most people, they wait until bad things start happening and fear sets in before they make the changes that they have to make. You don’t have to wait until you are “on the edge” before you start making changes…I am here to help you make the necessary changes before you get in trouble…regardless…I can help you either way…
How To Deal With Problems: Four Steps To Conquer Worrying About Problems
1. Face the fact that you have a problem. Stop “putting your head in the sand” hoping the problem will just suddenly disappear. The problem will NOT just go away…you will get slaughtered if you take this attitude. You do have to DO something.
2. State the problem clearly to yourself…write it out on paper.
3. Figure out a solution and ACT ON IT!
4. Never ever…never ever…never ever talk about the problem again…only talk about the solution from that moment on.
One of the worst things you can do to yourself is to Replay A Bad Movie OVER and OVER again. That’s what you do when you keep talking about your problems…you are reliving those problems over and over…this process of talking about your problems (replaying a bad movie) over and over DESTROYS your mental fortitude. It HURTS YOU…stop doing it.
Here’s the truth…and this is the hard truth…90% of the people you complain to, don’t care and the other 10% are glad it is happening to you and not them.
Replaying a bad movie over and over does nothing but destroy you…and you alone.
There are some things that can hurt you if you don’t realize it…consider these:
When times get tough, you need to be aware that there are some things that can hurt you if you are not aware of these issues. I am going to outline a few of these things so you don’t allow yourself to fall victim to any of these issues. You need to be flexible in your thinking if you want to survive and prosper in tough economic times.
Here are some things you should avoid like the plague:
Pride – Most people will need help from family, friends and associates in tough times. Swallow any pride you have and be prepared to ask for help when you need it. Now, I am not saying you don’t need to stay consistent and go to work on reaching your dreams… what I am saying is that if you just got kicked out of your house or apartment, ask someone to let you sleep on their floor or couch…don’t let your pride make things more difficult for you to succeed.
I will never forget what pride cost this friend of mine. His name was Julian. I was driving by his house one day and I saw the U-Haul truck in the front of his house. I immediately stop the car and asked him what happened…he said, “his house foreclosed on him for a total of about $4,000 dollars…he only owed about $30,000 on a house that was worth about $110,000 at the time…” I broke down and cried…I asked him how come he didn’t come to me and ask for help…he said, “I was too proud to ask for help.” At the time, I had about $700 in cash in my pocket…I took all of it and just gave it to him. Think about this…had I paid the $4,000 and then, we sold it…even if he gave me half of the proceeds, he would be walking away with $35,000 to $40,000 in his pocket…instead of the $700 I gave him. Never let pride get in your way of asking for the help you need.
Fear of Change – One thing you can count on is that things will be constantly changing. One of the philosophies that should help you is … Life does NOT stop, when it changes! You must stick with your plan and make minor adjustments as you keep on going. Never let yourself be frozen into inaction. As you get setbacks in business and life, KEEP ON GOING and stay consistent.
Undisciplined Habits – You can’t be inconsistent in your actions…you must develop sold routines and procedures that move you forward consistently…failure to do so may cause you to fail or just achieve mediocre results.
Negative Thinking – Any kind of negative thinking creates stress and it hurts you…it also demotivates you. It has no value to you…listen to audios and videos that help tilt your mind on to the positive side of positive thinking. This is just something you have to work on…limit you exposure to the television, newspapers or anything else that brings negatives to you. Make sure you are not the person who is walking on the beach in front of a beautiful house and you are thinking… “I bet the taxes are high”. You can’t even enjoy the walking on the sand…thinking the taxes are too high. You know when you are being negative…catch yourself and figure out how to change your thinking to something positive.
Associating With Negative People – Make sure you do everything in your power to limit the amount of time you spend talking with or hanging around anyone that is negative. It doesn’t matter if they are generally a nice person and a friend of yours. If you accidentally drink poison, you will get sick and it might even kill you if you accidentally drink too much poison. It is same thing with negative people…they don’t mean to hurt you…but, they keep spewing out their poison to anyone who will listen. I don’t let people vomit in my ear…I know the damage it causes…protect the input that goes into your mind.
I have share these few with you because it is important know that ALL disciplines affect the other disciplines. Therefore, make sure you are aware of the things that can hurt you so you avoid them. You don’t want them destroying the good things that you are implementing in your life and business.
What to do if things get real bad?
Unfortunately, from time to time, things can go wrong and everything just falls apart…
this is what most people are afraid of it happening to them. Like I shared with you earlier…life is unfair and things can happen and you can find yourself on the wrong side of an unfortunate situation. For example, let’s say you find yourself in a tough situation where you have no savings, no job and no house to sleep in. Now, you have good news… you have car to sleep in. Several years ago before I started my real estate career, I found myself in an unfortunate situation after a business failed…I had to sleep in my car.
Never forget…let go of your pride…ask for help as much as you can…and reframe the situation in your mind as a temporary situation that you will overcome.
By the way, if you think zero is the bottom, you are dead wrong. You can whistle right pass zero before you hit bottom. The purpose of me sharing this personal information with you is to let you know that you can turn your life around starting with nothing… right now. So, even though you don’t want to experience this kind of pain, it is not the end of the world and you can turn your life around starting with being homeless.
Here’s how I got out of the situation:
1. I reframed the situation in my mind as a temporary situation that I would overcome. This kept my mind thinking in empowerment terms, rather than a poor me victim perspective. The mind shift was absolutely critical.
2. I asked myself a powerful question…which changed my life forever…how can I make money ALL DAY LONG? Honestly, had I not had this unfortunate situation, I may never would have ask myself that question…because up to that point in my life I had never asked myself that question.
3. Here are some details that I know some people will want to know how I handled them: At the time I had a White Mazda 626 with seats that folded back so I was able to sleep fairly comfortably when I went to sleep. I was usually exhausted so I went to sleep fairly easily because I was really tired. I showered at the gym and I mostly was in gym clothes and athletic wear that I washed in a Laundromat. Finally, what most people don’t realize is that major grocery chain stores throw out perfectly good fruits and vegetables in their dumpsters in their original boxes many times when just a few of the fruits are actually bad.
4. Here’s how my day went…at 4:00 am to about 6:30 am, I prepared the papers and delivered the Tribune newspaper and I taught one hour aerobic classes at 9 am, 12 noon (some days) and one/two in the evenings at 5:30 pm and another at 8 pm. Now what I did on the days that I did not teach the 12 noon aerobics class, I found myself a job doing what I call… “walking down the street jobs”. I would go to the streets and ask (a better word might be I begged…I got good at begging them to give me a chance to work and prove that I would do a good job first) the owners and managers if I could do whatever they needed someone to do for an hour or two or three…how ever long they needed me…I would do whatever work they needed to get done…I told them I would do the work first and they could pay me in cash whatever they felt I was worth at the end. I always made more money that way because I would really hustle and do a great job. I did this until I was within 90 minutes to my evening aerobics class. Then, I added one more thing to the mix…I started selling nutritional products in the evenings when I didn’t have a 8 pm aerobics class. I basically worked from 4 am to about 10 pm every day…I kept busy…this was the answer to my question…how do I make money all day long? Basically, I found a way to make money from 4 am to about 10 pm every day.
5. That’s how you get yourself out of a messed up situation…ask yourself …how do I make money all day long?…then, go out and beg for work…do a great job and you will work your way out of the situation and reframe the situation as a temporary situation that you will overcome. I hope it never happens to you but, I do know…you can work your way out of the situation…rather quickly…if you follow that simple plan.
The best advice I can give you…is don’t wait until you are in trouble to work this hard. Do it now…while you have a home…and some money and the energy to make things happen. You can just start going for your dreams and goals so that things most likely will never go bad for you. Figure out a way to keep motivating yourself every day!
List of Questions To Keep Yourself Motivated and On Track Every Single Day
Negative thoughts are simply a warning for you to take positive action. I keep this list of questions in the front of my time planner so I can look at it when I’m feeling in the dumps. I simply start thinking up the answers so I can keep taking positive action toward my goals. Everyone should make up their own list of questions. Here’s the list:
